Scope and Contents

The Emily Hartman materials collection contains photographic slides, documents, and other materials from her time working with botanical specimens. Most photographs and materials are from her research in Colorado, but there are materials from outside of the state of Colorado as well. Photographic slides were originally arranged by the creator Emily Hartman based on location and subject matter of the photographs. Original order has been maintained though materials have been transferred to archival housing and enclosures.

Biographical / Historical

Emily L. Hartman (December 19, 1932 - April 4, 2018) was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Walter and Emily Obrecht Hartman. Her youth was spent there where she eventually earned her Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Kansas. She also earned a Master's degree in Library Science and spent several years delivering books to residents of Appalachia in Tennessee. She spent years as a professor of botany at universities in Kansas, California, and culminating her professional career in Colorado. Her research area was the flora of the alpine tundra of the Colorado Rocky Mountain region.
